The vocal is (IMHO) a tad bit too hot for the musical bed, which seems pretty even. I'd pull it down  1 -2 dB

the harmonies  seem slightly heavier to one side (which may be purposeful), so the sonic field isn't even L/R. If needed dupe one and move to the light side to even things out. This is more noticeable as there not a lot of instrumentation spread across the pan "stage"

The vocalist has some pitchiness/intonation issues (which isn't a mix problem, but a performance/delivery problem)... pitch correction may help, but a couple of spots may well give you noticeable artifacts

having said that... I hope the vocalists isn't your wife.... :o

lol No mate the vocalist isnt my wife. Even if it was I'd still like your candid opinions.
It was recorded in an hour over a premade backing the 13 yr old student bought with her. She's taking lessons from my vocal coach friend in my studio. As a way of encouraging her and rewarding her hard work I occasionally record her.
I've only just found out this is only her third lesson on the song.
I think i would have struggled with the breathing and pace lol smoker talking.
The vocals were recorded slightly hotter than i normally do and maybe it's my monitoring and my ears that causing this imbalance. I'll redress the balance thanks for that. And I'll try the pitch corrrection but like you say i dont hold out much hope with some noticable artefacts.
There are some pitch intonation problems I agree and the sibbilace issue was probably my biggest problem.
Which i must have coped with quite well as you didnt mention it.
Vocal signal chain was deEsser , EQ, comp, Limiter, reverb , deEsser
and mastering with Izotope Ozone.
Thanks for lending me your ears it's appreciated

I've tried to redress some of the issues
firstly i'm not sure i did a very good job of tuning the vocals (not really my strong point) im still learning.
The l/r balance i may have totally unbalanced the mix by trying to bring down the left channel a DB or two to try and even up the backing voacls.
and i still dont like the fact that she sings "record stops" when i'm convinced it should have read shops (verse 3)
but hopefully i will have made minor changes without too much damage
again i regard your ears and opinions highly so if you think it's worse dont hold back
thanks

spread is better, voice still seems hot (to my ears)

harmonies have a much better sound field

yep, pitch correction

It's an improvement, however, what will polish... is more practice on her part and then re-track her vocals

thanks mate agreed
and as you spotted i couldnt bring myself to lower the vocals down a bit it just seem to unbalance it. I will take heed infuture.
I think she has great potential given her age and i hope one day she will sing sessions for my studio as does her teacher.
All free i hasten to add, They do work for me and get to do some of there own recordings as payment. I call it free because although i get to do more work than them in return . I dont have to pay session singers.
I just wish i could find a worthy male session singer who would work as hard. Having said that i had a really good one he just moved away, shame but i'll keep looking.
Everyday i learn something new and helpful thank god for forums like this
