you said the million dollar word............................

experiment

I think you can make any combination work, with some combos being clear winners, and results varying dependent upon the listener...as well as the usual suspects (room acoustics and signal chain... and also the sound source, whether it be voice or instrument)

...and do keep notes for the rest of us!

I wont get much chance to do too much recording over the next couple of week since i'll be putting new wooden flooring in my living room over my holiday, never the less my new mic Naiant X_S mini omni condensor arrived a few days ago and i threw it up in front of the ovation just to see. Heres what happened let me know what you think please.

I get that mate.
It was just a quick trial at this time i wont get much chance to record. I'll put together a small mix with guitar recording through the X_S and see how it stands up.
I thought it was a fair representation of the sound i was after. I should add that it was capo'd in the 9th fret.
I intend the to experiment with the mic on an onboard bracket (mainly to cut down on bleed and room noise)
Also
mid side (not sure how this is going to work out)
Mic combinations
Differant preamps too ( the pre i ran the trial through is a little too hot overall)
I'll push the envelope and soon discover its strengths and weaknesses i hope
thanks for listening and commenting it's appreciated.

I've yet to try the mid side experiments but i did this last night just to see how the acoustic guitars would stand up in a mix
i hope you like it.

it's very much in front on this mix

good clarity, picks up the resonance nicely

I'd say it stands up... if not standing out a tad!

true i was a bit heavy handed with it in the mix. i though it was fairly representative of the original.
plus i kind of did the track as a mic review thing for another forum where the company owner hangs out.
It is a really good mic imho. it does what it says on the tin.
so easy to use too. mic placement is not quite as critical as with dynamic cardiods it all depends on how much room/ bleed you want in the track.
Ie being an omni it doesnt excert a proximity effect like a dynamic cardiod so you can get in close enough to the instrument without having to worry about hyped highs or lows.
I tried it on an onboard guitar bracket and it didnt sound as good as it did on the mic stand just my opinion
i tried it on a guitar cab and i prefer the sound i can get from a ribbon/dynamic combo better
i want to try it on some wind instruments (penny whistle etc)
you know what its like on new mic days you want to try it on everything.
thanks for listening and for the comments too its appreciated
btw heres the original if you want to listen (great artist too)
