Wow, what a huge difference!
« on: August 03, 2008, 02:38:32 PM »
Perhaps the single biggest improvement I ever made to my studio was to add sound treatment to the walls. I spent a lot of time reading and learning about how to do it correctly and all I can say is, WOW, what a difference it made! Completely a comparison like day and night. All of a sudden my mixes got way better. Perhaps you should consider this. (But, please don't use foam.)

Spend a little time at Ethan Winer's website. http://www.realtraps.com He has a lot of good reading material and even some instructional videos about improving your recording room acoustics. I've chatted with Ethan before and he is a really cool guy. Perhaps he will stop by here someday and enlighten us even more.

Anyway, many pro studios use an insulation product called Owens Corning 703 and the even denser 705 compressed rigid fiberglass board, the thicker the better. Also investigate that rock wool stuff or mineral wool or whatever they call it.
Hey folks! Sell your gear here. It's Free. http://www.proaux.com or http://www.freeaux.com
I use Crappy Drum Triggers and I likes `em.

This web site has some good stuff on this subject, actually. There's a tool that will calculate how much treatment you need based on what you'll be recording and the size and construction of the room you'll be recording in. It's also got all sorts of materials for you to build the treatment with yourself, which is way cheaper than just buying pre-built stuff.

This other web site has some details on a method of putting it all together so that the DIY materials are actually useful. It's pretty easy, from the looks of it. Basically just wrap the stuff in cloth.

My room acoustics suck  :(

I added 12 Auralex 2' x 2' x 2" Studiofoam Wedges.

Now it sucks a little less  :-\

I'm considering a few traps and have to find a way to quiet down my PC.

I've started treating my room...

I've built four broadband absorbers. Three are hanging behind my drums, and the other is over the mantelpiece. Although it's not much, they've made a HUGE difference. Everything seems much more clear now. I'm really looking forward to the day that I get the chance to build the other five...

I took another approach to bass traps which seems to have worked out well- I cut rigid fiberglass (an electric carving knife works great!) into triangles- 12" x 12" and 6" x 6" on the right angle sides and lay these into a corner which has a 2/3 ripped down at a 45° with a small rabbet(sp?)  cut into it for the 45° corners. this gives ~ 1" deadspace when the front (angled) face is covered with a piece of fabric covered 1" rigid fiberglass

I also made some other oddly shapped traps (see pics)- so pretty limitless possibilities... and it seems the solid mass would be better than the 2" (or 4") piece of rigid angled across the corner

I have the JBL LSR monitors with the room correction and adding these to the room eliminated most of the ERQ cuts

Be careful with that foam, Eugene.   ;D

Foam isn't as good a broadband absorber, so too much will just kill HF and leave the most problematic LF gremlins running around unabated.  12 is a perfect complement to use with broadband absorption as needed to tame HF.

If you're using a cardioid condenser, try to keep the PC in the null pattern.
