I haven't posted any tunes in a while
« on: September 12, 2011, 11:45:22 PM »
This is my band, my song, and a reworking of it- 2 of me bandmates had never heard this until tonight. The bassist was familiar with the original and this is a bit different

this a live/rehearsal take after 5 passes... there's clams, harmony searchings, and other extraneous noise

it is what it is

I'm not sure what the plan is ultimately for this.... tonight was more a "throw it out and see what happens" affair

way too loud, thought it was unmixed. Oops. Did you do it on purpose?
the guitar sounds a little muddy to me it could do with a little more detail in the highs just my unrefined ears.
and to be honest i didnt want to trash it or go first but hey here goes.

We already know that you can tell that for yourself. You've done fine mixes before. As always, you'll end up making it better.

It's a good tune. Worth refining. Though I thought the drums were somewhat overplayed. (It seems like there is a tom tom fill with crash at the end of almost every bar or lyric line.) Let the other instruments have some attention too. Just my $0.02

on purpose? or on porpoise?  >:D

The one problem with recording "live" in my room has always been drum bleed, it's less if I put dynamics on the vocals... but that's (IMHO) counterproductive. This really was after about 5 run-throughs, our drummer gets some leeway as he tries and figure out what to do... plus our keyboardist is on hiatus (maybe leaving....  :(  children rearing issues), and I've noticed not having him in the mix, EVERYONE tends to overplay a bit to try and fill the void that we're not used to having.  until he gives a official 'notice' we've agreed to not pot ads seeking a replacement (he's out till the end of Sept)

pretty much everyone in the band has made self critical comments... as well as suggestions on about everything else from me actually remembering the words (I believe I made up a different version/sequence each time we did it...)  to less/no oohs, more in the pocket drumming, bass more on the quarter note, vary the tone between the 2 guitars, I play acoustic instead of electric

and Kip... we're all pilgrims
