how do i do this
« on: August 24, 2011, 12:35:20 PM »
ok heres the deal
i really like the artist Nils Lofgren and the song
but more than that i love the production on this song
the guitar seems to totally envelope the track. Its spread across the stereo field and seems to be engineered so that the notes are pinging across from ear to ear (btw im listening on headphones)
the clarity is amazing
How do i acheive this any ideas guys thanks

Stainless, your link doesn't seem to work for me. Is anyone else getting it to work?

Kip4, That could be a stereo widening effect. (Good tune. Nice recording.)

This must be it...

(Perhaps the three dots in the middle of your link were causing my problem.)

Kip, upon closer examination of the song file you posted, there seems to be a really fast ping-pong delay effect between opposite speakers. In other words, a sound which occurs mostly in the right speaker is repeated in the left speaker about 125 milliseconds later, and then again  in the right speaker about 125 milliseconds after that. Each repeat grows weaker and weaker and it can happen either direction. I think that is how the widening effect works too, but I'm not positive.

That's my best guess anyway.

I had someone try to explain to me setting up tracks in the following fashion

take a track and hard pan to one side, set up a send to:

an aux bus with a delay panned hard right- now send  it:

to another aux hard panned hard left with a delay on it

maybe this is what he was going for (I never tried it)

i think RawD may have what's going on pegged

well I tried it... interesting effect... maybe not exactly what you're after... but I can see it being a really cool fade out

I had to push the L and R "pings" 250 and 500 ms... and even then the 2nd "ping" still isn't as pronounced

or maybe not...

Thanks guys and thanks for the auto panner too
it might take a while to get this right but time is one thing i have. I pity my studio widow.
i tried last night befor eyou posted this
track 1 panned left sdc on fret board neck joint with mod delay and trueverb
track 2 centred amp direct no verb
track 3 panned right roomworks reverb
this certainly widened the image but still fell short of the effect in the recording
You know how sometimes just asking the question sometimes provokes an answer along the lines of what you guys said.
I'm going to have to audition the recording again and keep trying i think.
I'll try some differant auto panners too thanks

Its still not quite as i expected but i've been messing around and this is how far i have got
Heres a quick recording of some blues riffs
signal chain
ovation
left and right (duplicated track) scd joint of neck 4"
direct amp signal centered ,
m audio delta sound cards to pc
originaly i recorded another mic poined !2" down at body but i omitted this at the time of trialing the effects. I wish i hadnt now it really beefed up the sound and with a differant reverb to the other sdc it gave the recording a wider feel.

i applied a tremelo effect to both left and right panned duplicate mic channels and reverd through a group channel think it was true verb.
then at mastering applied stereowidening and peak compressor and a whole bunch more reverb with a quick early reflection (wavelab) to try to get that roomy feel.
Guess i'll keep trying
maybe i need to mess with the tremolo a bit more maybe tommorow.
thanks for listening guys i'll post more as i endevour to attempt this

Hmmmm, that was interesting too

i do wonder how noticeable this will be with other instruments (fixed in place I assume), could be difficult to keep it clear without frequency "collision"

but do continue on!

Does your DAW have a pencil tool for drawing in automation?  should make it a 'snap'... to bad you can't cut and paste just the automation

this time i recorded the melody line 3 ways and offset them time wise and panned them L R C
might have overdone it on the offsetting . sounds unatural but big mmmmmmmmm
