Frequencies to target to lessens ambient crowd noise?
« on: January 23, 2011, 02:07:05 PM »
I know this isn't home recording, but I figured there are a lot of experts here.  I recorded my band's gig using a room mic.  It was a noisy room with lots of crowd chatter.  Any suggestions for frequencies to target to try and lessen some of the ambient crowd chatter?

Well, that's a tough one. Many voices will probably be most dominant between say, 500 and 3500 Hz. The letter "ess" sound is usually up around 5000 or 6000 Hz. However, consider that there may be lots of other noises mixed in with a crowd, such as clanking glasses, the shuffling of feet, sliding chairs, running smoke eaters, clapping, laughing/giggling, back-bar noises, etc. The range of noise can be seemingly endless. To make matters worse, the band produces most of those same frequencies. If you carve out the noise you may also be carving out some of the instruments or singing as well.

Good luck with it.

yes, though situation

First, I'd sweep the frequency range of the tune while playing (loop and especially "noisy" section), then you could try a very tight cut, but this will cut those frequencies out of the band, so I'd suggest a multi band compressor  with a very tight band at the frequency band you found the most noise at (and you may have several noisy sections, and then use a de-esser on the 5-6KHz

also using a get may eliminate a lot of it, as I'm sure the band was louder than the crowd, and the crowd becomes the noise floor ;)
