send effects

(1/1)

kip4:
im experimenting with effects as a send rather than inserts at the mo as they seem to eat less cpu
some vst's are better than other as sends
guys i want to know which ones u find best as sends and any advice would be welcome too ty

I routinely use sends,

Drums- I will set up 2 sends for each drum- 1 is to a stereo buss with reverb on it, and the other is a stereo buss with compression. I can adjust the individual levels of each drum track sent, but the overall effect applied (setting) is consistent. I believe this avoids the common critique where the snare , or hat, or etc... doesn't sound like it's in the same "place"a s the rest of the kit... which often seems to be a result of using a different reverb of compression setting

Like wise, I will use sends on vocal tracks  or keyboards for the same purpose

I sometimes will set up multiple master faders, directing some tracks to one, and other tracks elsewhere. In Protools LE, Fx on the masters seem to be exempt from any latency issues (which PT LE does not has ADC... and in low latency mode, sends are muted when the tracks are armed for recording)- The master tracks allows for some 'real time' processing with effects

I think some of the more specialized Fx's have less reason to apply to a buss (I can't imaging too many instances where I'd want overdrive, or a phase shifter applied to lots of tracks, and likewise EQ is usually specific to a track unless you're at your final mix, then a stereo EQ might have some use (but IMHO, if the individual tracks were recorded properly, then the amount of EQ required on the individual track would be minimal and EQ issues would likewise be minimal in the stereo mix

using aux buss and multiple masters saves CPU resources because you're not having to apply so many plug-ins. My current "band" requires 15 tracks to record rehearsals, plus another 4 stereo aux/buss, and 2 masters

and, using your sends to direct tracks to plug-ins helps streamline workflow

It took me some time to use sends in digital session, I was used to send/returns with analogue gear, and often the number of channels available was limited so there was a hesitancy to tie up another 1or 2 for a dedicated effects channel, plus the bigger consoles typically had built-in 4-5 band EQ and compression and reverb was often in the initial signal path (so you had be certain that's what you wanted on the track... or else you'd have to re-track)
