Direction of my monitors in an apartment.
« on: August 03, 2010, 11:35:45 PM »
HEY!

I have a question for you!  I am moving to an apartment (I am choice-less) for a year and wondering about a configuration.  I will have a neighbor on the next wall that my studio will be placed.  What would you think is better?  My studio monitors on the wall of the neighbor pointed at the opposite wall?  Or - The monitors placed at the opposite wall of the neighbor pointed at the neighbors wall, or the monitors placed on the wall that points across the room to the wall with the door so the sound would not hit the neighbors wall but go across it.

Any info or help I would appreciate it.

Welcome. I don't think it matters much because bass is omni-directional, meaning it goes in all directions. Even at low volume it can probably be heard through a standard wall.

You may want to go to your neighbor and introduce yourself. Explain that you have a small "hobby" studio and that he may hear the speakers through the wall occasionally. Ask what time of day would be best to avoid any noise. (There may be a baby who naps or a night shift worker.) Then resolve to using headphones during those hours.

At least you'll be starting off on the right foot.

It will be rough trying to meet the neighbor because one time I did that they were horribly mean about me letting them know exactly what you said.  I might go that route this time again if i feel up to it or I might just PEACEMAKER the whole wall and try to analyze when they go in and out.

Thanks for the answer, nice little forum you got here.

welcome to HRS

if you can posket the expense of some treatment that may be your best hope- most apartments have some soundboard in the "partywall" which is often 2 walls back to back with the SB in between....older apartments, you're lucky if there's insulation.

As RawD mentioned, bass will be the biggest peace breaker, and basstraps would go a long way in helping this- I' trap the ceiling to back wall, bot corners and place your monitors facing away from your neighbor

bass traps on the back corners would also be a help as would some diffusers- these can be built/bought so you can take with you

good luck

with any luck, your neighbor will be a musician!
