rehearsal room recordings
« on: March 14, 2010, 09:18:46 AM »
several times now the studio owner i work for and i have done field recordings of full bands in a local (Lincolnshire UK) rehearsing room.
the room is stone clad block building about 7m x 4.5m in a remote area of the country side
the insides of the rooms have thick blankets hung on the inside walls
the inside walls are plaster board (dry wall) built on a wooden frame seperated from the outer wall by a cavity.
sonically the space is a good size and not too live
we use two full hieght gobos to isolate the drums in a corner
the rest of the band are spread along the rest of the building we usually track the instruments first then the vocals later.
we have had good results so far i wish i could post some of the results here.
i'll ask him and see if he wil allow it
just wanted to share this
thanks for reading

Wow, that sounds cool. I wish I had a larger space to record full bands. I have recorded drums, bass, and scratch guitar simultaneously but not more than that.

Do you have any problems with bass buildup (hot spots/modes) in the room?

not that i'm aware of  (bass build up)
all the instruments including bass are direct injected into a yamaha aw1600
except the drums which are mic'ed of course you get some bleed on the drum mics from the guitar n bass amps
we use a seperate mixer to sub mix the drum mics which of course means less seperation i the mixs but so far it hasnt been a problem
vocals are recorded once all the instrumentals are down
the price of the room hire is around £9 per hour and is included in the rate for live room recording
backing vocals and additional overdubs are added later but are tracked in the small home studio at a price minus the rental on the live rehearsal room rate
thats what we do for a live type recording and semi studio feel albums
it's great fun and the bands are mostly nice too
i say mostly because we deal with upcoming young bands who tend to be a bit overconfident and want to tell us how to record sometimes which can piss
us off a bit but its normally just a case of saying you play we'll record lol

OK, I'll make one for you. I am busy the next few days tho. (My day job is sending me away for specialized training/certification.) I have wanted to make one for some time. Give me a week or so to work on it. I'll put it in the Articles section.
