Headphones
« on: February 08, 2010, 09:42:59 AM »
Hi all,

I'm looking for some decent headphones.

I'm thinking Beyerdynamic DT100.  They had these at college - they were good...

Any other suggestions welcome...

I'll be using them for mixing as mum is fed up with the noise.  Then when I move, they'll be monitors for singers etc.

Thanks,

Gaz

I'm not familiar with the Beyerdynamics- I've mainly got Sony MDR-V700DJ's, my only real nit about them is the threaded 1/8 x 14" plug adapter and the black "material/fabric" they use to cover the ear cups and headband.... it falls apart rather quickly...

I have an old pair of Koss which are heavy... but I rather like them.  I saw in one of the mags (I think it might have Tape-Op) a "Direct Sound Ex-29"  extreme isolation headphones which look interesting and are ~ $100 US on e-bay (new)

Hi
When I last upgraded my recording equipment I got a pair of Sennheiser HD25s. I went for these because I knew my room would not support a good set of monitor speakers. (presently looking into treating same room)

I can only speak highly of them. They are particularly useful for blocking out exterior noises from what your hearing. You put them on on and it feels like your in a dead room. They really fit snugly. Great for field recording or recording/mixing in a room with musicians playing live and your in the same room. You can hear things you can't hear through my stereo speakers. Ticks and clicks and subtle sonic differences.

I've seen a couple of web articles suggesting that you can mix/monitor well with headphones as long as your aware of what the sound is doing as opposed to speaker monitors. You need to take into account the differences. Worth some research if you will be using them for this purpose. The stereo image in particularly requires a new approach when using headphones.

Hope this helps.
